Rationale, Project Concept, Action Plan & Evaluation

Rationale

For the past 2 years, I have completed 12 units in Creative Media, looking at sound, how to light for green screen, how to use sound equipment, camera and tripod, editing using Premiere Pro, action scripting to create a flash banner, representation theory, audiences, genre, video installations, French New Wave and documentary filmmaking. Thanks to that I learned about new aspects of filmmaking and gained valuable skills that I can apply in many different ways outside of media production. I expanded my knowledge of audiences, genre and narrative and I learned how to apply that when I do research for my projects. I learned how to do simple animations (eg. a walk cycle) in After Effects, how to edit film using the Steenbeck and how to write documentary treatments. I learned to be more critical and objective when doing research and how to source properly.

I intend to use all of my skills and knowledge in every step of my final project in order to achieve a merit or distinction.

Project Concept

For my final major project I am going to create a 7-8 minutes long mockumentary. I will plan and research all aspects of my final project before I begin filming. The concept of my project is urban legends and my aim is to show how gullible people can be when they want to believe in something no matter how strong the evidence that it's not real. I will first research films that have similar plot or format (films that deal with urban legends and mockumentaries), then I will research urban legends that are similar to my idea. I will conduct a survey and interviews to establish what my target audience is and begin pre-production after I have done that. After I have completed the script and the storyboard, I will make a timetable so I can book any equipment and the film studio if I need to, in advance.

I will consider my target audience throughout my project.

Evaluation

I will evaluate my production development through constant reflection, documenting my weekly development in a diary that I set up in my blog.

  • Planning - I will be recording the process in the production log.

  • Research (Secondary) - I will use this to support the decision making when scriptwriting and influence my film.

  • Research (Primary) - I will use this to find out what my target audience is and what they want to see and use the feedback I receive when I plan how my story will play out.

  • Production - I will reflect on the filming locations I plan to use to find out if the lighting is not appropriate, review shots after I’ve filmed them, be critical of my camera work and analyze how to improve when a shot does not look the way I want because of lighting or the camera position. I will evaluate my ability to improvise in case of an actor dropping out of the production and how well I can rewrite the script in a short period of time in order to exclude them in case they drop out after I've already filmed scenes with them.

  • I will reflect on my editing to find the aspects that I need to improve on in the future.
